1. Delayed Release Dates
There might be nothing worse than waiting for a book to come out, especially when you've already been waiting forever. You've circled the day on your calender, with stars and exclamation marks and you've blogged about it, you've told all your friends about it, your foot is anxiously tapping with impatience and then it doesn't arrive. You've got to wait another week. Give me the god damn book already.
2. People Who Don't Understand That It's Totally Normal To Want To Stay In And Read
Seriously, there is nothing wrong with wanting to read a book in bed instead of going out. It may not be everyone's idea of a great night, but it is certainly mine.
3. When They Make A Movie Of My Favourite Book Only To Change The Plot
That is just not cool! There are no words to say how crappy it is to change an amazing plot just so you can add your own creative voice to it. If it's already awesome, don't change it! It's someone else's beautiful masterpiece. You wouldn't try and change someone's oil painting or sculpture, don't change their book - unless you're their editor... then it's kind of your job to suggest improvements.
4. People Who Just Won't Leave You Alone To Read
Just because other people don't always appreciate a good book, doesn't mean they shouldn't appreciate that I want to be left alone to read that really good book that they just don't appreciate. Seriously, if I wanted food then I would get food. If I wanted to watch tv with you, I'd do that. There are thousands of questions you might want to ask me, including the colour of the fucking sky but keep your questions to yourself at least until I finish this bloody chapter.
5. A Dead Battery
That moment when your battery runs dry and you just got to the climax of the story you are reading on your e-reader device. SERIOUSLY! There is nothing worse - except perhaps that moment when your battery is dead and you want to read that book that's got you completely hooked and you realise that you haven't got your charger with you. This might actually be the end of the world.
6. People Who Say They Don't Like To Read
They have no idea what they are saying and they have no idea how much my opinion of them has just shrunk. It sucks and it makes me sound like an absolute bitch but I can deal with that. Everyone on the planet should read. Reading should be a none negotiable part of being human. If that makes me a bitch then okay.
7. Having To Go To Work (OR ANYWHERE ELSE) When All I Want To Do Is Read
Sometimes all I want to do is read. I don't want to work. I don't want to sleep. I don't want to eat. I don't want to do anything except read and sometimes life seems to get in the way of that. It's just not cool.
8. People Who Borrow Your Book Only To Steal It
It's mine. Not yours. If I decide to share it with you, it's because I think you'll enjoy it. That does not mean it's a gift. I didn't wrap it in paper, put a label on it or wish you happy birthday or a merry christmas. Therefore to keep it is just not cool. There are several books on my list of "LOST BOOKS" and it just isn't okay. I wanted that copy of The Time Traveller's Wife and I wanted to re-read Elizabeth Gaskel's North And South. That's why I bought them. You should have bought them if you didn't think you'd give it back. You suck! Okay rant over sorry. LOL.
9. People Who Read Over My Shoulder
Seriously if you want to read, get a book, don't read mine. I am trying to lose myself in a story. I'm trying to give myself some time to myself and you are invading into that privacy. You are ruining my book. Instead of focusing on the words, the story, the characters, the plot... I am thinking about the sound of your breathing. The feeling of your eyes on the pages of my book. It's my bloody book.
10. Books That Break My Heart
Okay this is a little bit silly and it might not belong on this list, but I hate books that cause me emotional distress. I hate that I love them so much. I hate that it makes me sob like a baby. I hate that I end up mourning over characters as if I've known them my whole life. As much as I'm complaining about this, it is one of the things that makes a really good book so as much as it kills me to have my heart broken almost every time I read a book I wouldn't change it for the world.
