From what I can see, it's always been the way and if I was like Bones and an anthropologist I'd probably have the answer. It's probably something about the alpha males ability to provide all the essentials; food, shelter, procreation... boring bit over... regardless of what it is inside us that drives us towards them, you can't deny, us women love them. We love a bad boy. The guy in leathers on the back of a bike or if we do like a good guy, it's the FBI agent with a gun who just so happens to take down those bad boys.
So I thought in the interest of science, I'd make a list of all my favourite ALPHA MALE attributes and some protagonists that are 'perfect specimens' of those beautiful, lusty attributes.
1. ARROGANCE - lesson number one in writing is to make sure your characters aren't perfect. They have to have flaws. They need to be human or your reader won't relate. Arrogance is like Alpha Male Flaw No. 1 and when it's missing in our protagonists I feel a little let down. Arrogance personified? DARCY! Austen gave us the perfect alpha male right there in P and P when she wrote Darcy. He's sulky and moody and definitely thinks himself above the company and you can't help but love him for it. There's something attractive about a man who knows his own value; perhaps a bit too well. In my latest serial novel, History the protagonist Andrew is 100% the embodiment of arrogance and I love him for it.
2. BROKENNESS - back to that lesson about flawed characters, every alpha male has a dark past that keeps him at a distance from the world. He's broken but he's too proud and independent to show it to anyone except you. That's why we love them. It's the vulnerability that we find when they open up. It's "fifty shades of fucked up" and that's how we love it. Christian Grey was the victim of abuse and neglect. Gideon Cross was another victim of abuse. Beth Kery's Ian Noble had a mentally ill mother and a criminal for a father. Even in my own books, Landon Peters can't commit because the only girl he ever loved died and Andrew Contius' mother has more issues than the word issues could possibly describe. Their brokenness makes it impossible not to love them.
3. SUCCESS - every alpha male is successful. It's routed in his determination not to let his brokenness define his life. He refuses to settle for anything less that what he's capable of and of course in all his alpha male glory that's a hell of a lot. You never read about an alpha male being overlooked for a promotion at work.
4. RECOGNITION - not only are alpha male's successful but everyone knows it. They are widely acclaimed and well known in their fields. Their opinion is worth something. Their time is like pixie dust. It's not to be wasted. Alpha Males are respected and those who don't respect them quickly learn to. It's amazing how even astrophysics can be hot when you consider the work and effort that goes into getting a PHD in Astrophysics. He might have blonde sweepy hair, blue eyes, muscles, and everything else... wearing a pair of glasses that seem to draw your full focus into his fuck worthy eyes... and then you ask what he does and he tells you and you don't really understand but the way he talks about it. The gestures he uses. It's hot. It's fucking hot. You're licking your lips as you watch his lips caress the words as he says them. You'd have him inside you right now if you could but you can't because you have a glass of wine in hand and you're surrounded by people at a wedding. See recognition is bloody beautiful.
PROTECTIVENESS - often Alpha types are far too over-protective but we love them for it. You can't help but forgive them for their serious breaches of common courtesy when they have such good intentions. Your safety is paramount because you are their world. Without you they have nothing. That does something to the ego...
MONEY -Alpha Men tend to have money to back up that reputation they've earned. Truth is, I'm not sure this really matters but in our society we tend to equate money with social standing. That's why so many of today's alpha male protagonists tend to be billionaires. Millions aren't good enough any more. He's got to be the top of the crop.
POWER - Why does money matter? It matters because we think to have money is to have power and every alpha male has to be powerful. He can't be weak. He has to have a strength that is not only deep and eternal but raw and on the surface. His power radiates and pulsates, just like the power of his dick. Power is key to the Alpha Male. We love our powerful men... and we love it even more when they abuse that power (slightly) just enough to blur the lines.
ATTRACTION - It doesn't matter if they are the most handsome man alive. They could be slightly mature; late thirties even early forties. They could be physically scarred. None of that matters so long as they attract the reader and the female protagonist alike. How? In the way they act. The way they move. The words they use. Attraction is so important but it's not purely physical.
COMMANDING - Alpha Males are men who know what it is to be in charge. It all comes back to power. These are men that not only have power but they know how to use and abuse it. They are often heavy handed; often mroe heavy handed than even the most willing reader would allow in reality. We're all feminists at heart... but just because we believe in being strong women doesn't mean for a second that we don't like it when our men take control. In my Rules Series, even though Aurora was an independent woman she enjoyed submitting to Landon on occasion and Landon loved being in charge.
SEXUAL DOMINANCE - this is perhaps the most important thing. You might not be into the proper hard stuff but every girl wants a guy that will tie her to the bed and fuck her into oblivion. We all want a man who will kiss us without a second thought. We want sexual tension that is so potent we can smell it in the air and feel it on our skin. We want a man who we would be willing to trust with our lives, hearts and our very soul.
It's fair to say that there are thousands and millions and possibly billions of reasons why the contemporary woman much like her historic counterparts loves to love an Alpha Male. However you look at it, romance novels just wouldn't be the same if we didn't have alpha's like Darcy, Grey, Cross, Noble, Stark, Chase, Peters and Contius. We love them and we might want to fix them a bit too but more than anything we just want to lose ourselves in them.
